Authorities predict that states as far south as Oregon and Illinois will be able to see auroras, after a powerful solar flare was spotted on the sun earlier this week. NASA reports that the X7.1-strength solar flare was followed only two days later by a whopping X9-level flare, the largest flare of the solar cycle.
